In this series of works titled the 'Captains Triptych' the 'Captains Cottage' once a family home, now a holiday cottage is the physical site from which forays into the psychotopology (the psychic as opposed to geographical mapping of an area) of the place and the artists identity as a Cornishman are undertaken. Notions of community, ownership, belonging and alienation are explored through the iconic actions and images Whitford employs.
Whitford has built a relationship with this site physically and metaphorically, using the site as a gateway through which to enter into a mythical narrative that remains close to the everyday realities of contemporary Cornwall and yet amplifies them into the super reality of story time/space.
