In this examination of networking Artdept referenced the processes described in the seminal self-help book 'How To Make Friends And Influence People'. By following the six networking steps outlined in the text they were able to deconstruct the process and create a specific business card for each of the steps. Rebecca and people Artdept came into contact with then enacted this six card process. Participants reported feeling simultaneously charmed and repulsed.
Networking takes place in a space between work and leisure, between the professional and the personal. It requires the deployment of charm, personalised responses, specific knowledge, and the giving over of the sense of importance to the other. The six card process offered the perfect frame for an intervention that highlighted the processes at play within the construction of social and professional relations. This analysis is an extension of ArtDept's interest in the artist as a cultural commodity and in the creation of art as a social act.
