Hotline continued ArtDepts attempts at usurping and parodying the apparatus of power, in redirecting systems and structures and in questioning the validity of anonymous unaccountable organisations that swallow resources. Artdepts approach fused a kind of textual neo - dada ‘absurdist’ critique of contemporary culture and the use of an apparently benign corporate advertising aesthetic.
The work was composed of elements of installation, video and performance writing and required ArtDept to collaborate with a programmer in order to create the structure to deliver the performance writing. The resultant automated phone line funnells the unsuspecting audience through options that ultimately lead in circles or to dead ends, their progress inundated by periods of ‘Muzac’, fax machine noises, and lines that go dead.
This process casts the audience as performers who through frustration & humour appreciate the critique of modern life that is being made.
